Before you select your next luxury vehicle, consider one man's story of the vehicle he chose.

"At 10:27 a.m. on Wednesday, October 26, my LS 460 was blindsided by an 18-ton truck traveling at 70 mph. It left no skid marks at the scene. The impact tore the entire front left-wheel assembly off my Lexus, sending it more than 250 yards away, and spun the vehicle into the truck, crushing the rear. Fortunately, the entire cabin was left intact and I walked away without a scratch. Shortly after, I called my Lexus dealer and said, ‘Naturally, I want the same car this time around.6"

Powertrain Warranty Coverage

New car warranty protection is such an important aspect of your confidence and peace of mind when you're behind the wheel. Lexus and BMW each offer identical 4-year / 50,000-mile new vehicle warranty coverage terms4 - but that's where the commonalities end. Looking at powertrain warranty coverage terms, BMW powertrain coverage ends when the new warranty expires - after 4 years / 50,000 miles. Lexus drivers will be able to enjoy powertrain warranty coverage for 6 years / 70,000 miles4 - a full 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW. If you're searching for superior quality with comprehensive warranty coverage, Lexus certainly makes the most sense.

Vehicle dependability study

DEPENDABILITY - LEXUS TOPS J.D. POWER U.S. VEHICLE DEPENDABILITY STUDYSM (VDS)

Another key concern when considering a new vehicle is long-term dependability. While sophisticated engineering and advanced technology may catch a buyer's attention, vehicles which consistently deliver high performance and perform reliably everyday often earn a spot in their garage.

J.D. Power Award

Every year, the J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS) measures the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100) during the past 12 months by original owners of three-year old vehicles1. In 2024, original owners of 2021 model year vehicles were asked to report their experiences. This study covers 184 specific problems grouped into 9 major vehicle categories, with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

Lexus stands at the top of the competition in terms of dependability with a score of 135 PP100. This is a full 53 problems per 55 vehicles lower than the industry average of 190 PP 100. Compared to the completely average BMW score of 190 PP100, Lexus is the clear winner in terms of dependability.

A good way to take the pulse of a given brand is to look at its midsize sedan offering, so we’re doing a side-by-side comparison of the Lexus ES and the BMW 5-Series. The first thing to notice is the price difference. There’s nothing wrong with a more expensive car, as we are talking about luxury cars here, provided you get more for that money. But take a look at the engines in these two sedans and you’ll realize that the BMW is going to have a hard time justifying that higher price. Take a look at the difference in standard equipment and the 5-Series price becomes even more baffling. Both vehicles come with heated front seats, and the Lexus throws in ventilation and a heated steering wheel as standard equipment, both extra-cost options on the BMW. Those seats are also trimmed in leather on the ES 350 Ultra Luxury, while leather upholstery on the 530i will add another couple thousand to the price.

The list of equipment that’s standard on the ES but costs extra on the 5-Series is extensive, making the price difference that much more stark. And the fact that Lexus includes a year of routine maintenance with the price of the ES, while BMW doesn’t, is just icing on the cake. Lastly, though not many people are likely to buy a midsize luxury sedan as a towing vehicle, the fact that the car that’s already the better choice for so many other reasons also gives you the option for some light towing is just an excellent illustration for this whole comparison.
